A Girl’s Best Friend

Everyone has that one pair of shoes that they love  to wear. Whether it’s because they make you feel like you are walking on clouds, or they boost your confidence by a thousand, nothing makes you happier than putting them on. For some people they feel most confident when they are comfortable and for others its that cute pair of heels that seem to catch the eye of everyone in the room. No matter what kind of shoe it is, you all know exactly what I am talking about. I bet you are thinking about how much you wish you had them on right now!

For me, that pair of shoes are my racing spikes! There is nothing like the adrenaline I get from pulling the light weight pair of shoes over my foot and lacing them up for a race! I go from being just a normal runner to someone who has raced in state championship meets. From someone who just runs everyday to someone how gives it all I got in a race. All of these emotions hit me just from lacing up a pair of shoes. When I have them on, suddenly nothing else matters.

After my senior year, I decided to take some time off running. Honestly I thought I had probably ran my last race ever. So, I hung up my racing spikes in my room as a reminder of all the races I had ran and memories I had made. It wasn’t until almost a full year later that I realized how much I missed the feeling of putting them on for a race. I decided I had taken enough time off and started running a few times a week on my own. Nothing crazy though, and I still had no intentions of racing again. It wasn’t until the start of my sophomore year that I thought maybe I’ll race again. I had decided to run a half marathon in my home town with one of my friends from high school. In order to train for the half I started running a lot on my own, but for anyone who has ever tried running alone, it sucks! That’s when I made the decision to join Ball State’s run club. From the very first practice I was so glad I made that decision.

This past Sunday was my first race with the club, and I couldn’t have been happier to lace up my spikes again. Getting them back out and putting fresh pins(the metal spikes that go in the bottom of the shoe) in them, made me all the more excited about the race. Finally lacing them back up brought back so many memories from high school and reminded me how much I love the sport.

If you haven’t found that pair of shoes that make you feel invincible, you really should try! Even though they are just a pair of shoes, they carry so many memories with them and can change your whole mood just by putting them on!
